Planning a wedding is more than setting a date or choosing a colour palette — it’s a journey of intention, family ties and faith. For Malay-Muslim couples in Singapore, this sacred chapter invites reflection, unity and thoughtful decisions. If you’re newly engaged or feeling unsure where to start, this timeline offers a blend of tradition and practical guidance to support you from 12+ months out all the way up to your Nikah day. Let us walk alongside you, month by month, towards a celebration that’s peaceful, heartfelt and truly yours.  Let’s take the first step – from the very beginning.

12+ Months Before: Setting Intention, Building Foundations

When you’re ready, gather your families and share openly about the values and customs that are important to you and your partner. Approach this with sincerity and niyyah, as it lays the emotional groundwork and sets the tone for the months ahead. It’s also the time to plan a budget that aligns with the priorities that matters most. Once your intentions are clear, the next step is building a solid foundation. Start by soft-booking wedding dates (and backup dates), and exploring venue options. Just remember to factor in guest size and accessibility when deciding whether to hold your Nikah and majlis at the same location! Speaking of which, you can also start drafting your guest list at this point. It’ll give you a sense of your wedding size so that you can make informed decisions on space, catering and budget moving forward. You might also want to start looking into photographers, caterers, bridal stylists and wedding coordinators. Many couples find that all-inclusive packages — like those offered at The Iris — can ease this process by providing a seasoned team who will help manage vendor coordination and timelines with care and expertise. Note: You don’t have to wait until the 12-month mark to begin setting your budget, booking your wedding date, and exploring venue options and packages. Starting early helps you secure your preferred dates and vendors before they fill up!

11 Months Before: Laying the Legal Framework

With your foundation set, the next stage is to legally register your marriage with the Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM). ROMM applications typically open about 5 to 6 months before your selected Nikah date — so now is the ideal window to read up on what an application requires, prepare your documents and begin thinking about who you’d like to solemnise your marriage. Contact your chosen tok kadi early as their calendars can fill up quickly during peak seasons. If you need more direction regarding ROMM, check out our detailed guide here. While it’s not mandatory unless one of you is under 21, couples are encouraged to attend a marriage preparation course. This is a recommendation supported by Families for Life, an initiative under the Ministry of Social and Family Development. There are various courses available to help you and your partner build a strong foundation for married life.

10 Months Before : Securing Your Key Vendors

After settling the formalities, you’ll want to bring your core wedding team on board. Most couples at this stage will have confirmed the key vendors that are essential to the big day. These typically include:
  • Photographer and/or Videographer
  • Halal-certified caterer
  • Mak andam
  • Wedding coordinator
  • Tok kadi (confirmed during ROMM)
Securing these vendors will help you finalise your Nikah date with confidence. When deciding on a photographer, you can consider opting for a pre-wedding shoot. It’s a good opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera and see if their style feels right for you.  At the same time, begin shopping for your wedding outfits, especially if you’re thinking about custom pieces. Traditional songket or tailored gowns often require more lead time as they involve intricate designs and multiple fittings.

8 to 9 Months Before: Fine-Tuning the Details

With your core vendors secured, it’s time to focus on the special touches that bring your celebration to life. If you already selected your wedding attire, reach out to your coordinator to finalise your pelamin decór so it complements your overall theme. Consider incorporating time-honored traditions like kompang troupes or silat performances alongside modern elements such as an emcee, a live band, or an interactive photo booth to keep your guests entertained. If you’re holding a berinai ceremony, start looking for a henna artist as well since popular dates fill out fast. This is also the perfect moment to plan your dulang hantaran trays (traditionally an odd number). These trays are often a sign of mutual respect between families; so take some time to choose items that are meaningful to you both.

6 to 7 Months Before: Planning Your Nikah Outfit & Schedule

At this stage, it’s important to confirm your bridal outfit and decide whether your families want to coordinate their looks too. Be sure to schedule dress and suit fittings early, especially if your outfit involves custom tailoring, to allow for any last minute adjustments. You may also begin outlining your wedding day itinerary.  Keep in mind to cover both the nikah and bersanding ceremonies. This early draft will help you visualise the programme flow before finalising details closer to the date.

3 to 5 Months Before: Confirming Invitations, Tastings & Logistics

By now, you’ll likely have a clear grasp of your guest list and can start preparing your invitations. Choose a stationer, share with them your theme or motif, and aim to send the invites at least three months before the big day to give your guests ample time to respond. In addition, couples often complete these tasks at this stage:
  • – Confirm your wedding cake and finalise your catering menu after attending tastings
  • – Arrange transportation for the bridal party and guests if your Nikah and Bersanding are at different venues
  • – Reconfirm your wali and two witnesses’ attendance at Your Nikah ceremony
  • – Appoint trusted family members or friends to assist with decoration, ushering and other duties if you’re not engaging a coordinator
Amidst all the logistics, don’t forget to set some time aside to plan your honeymoon too. Revisit the priorities you discussed early on and let them guide you in choosing a trip that reflects your values and shared idea of rest.

1 to 2 Months Before : Completing the Final Preparations

At this point, you’ve laid the groundwork. Now, it’s about ensuring everything you planned can unfold with ease and grace. Once your guests get back to you, begin finalising your seating arrangement and updating your caterer on the final headcount. Don’t forget to inform them of any dietary requests too! Plus, contact all vendors to reconfirm the venue address and exact call times. You should also finalise your wedding itinerary, ensuring it includes time for prayer and some buffer for unexpected delays. Share this with your coordinator, point persons, speakers and if applicable, your photographer and videographer, to keep everyone aligned. Lastly, prepare your door gifts and assemble your dulang hantaran trays.

1 to 2 Weeks Before: Reviewing & Readying the Heart

As your wedding day draws near, it’s time to centre yourself and make sure all practical details are in place. Begin by packing your wedding outfits, accessories and an emergency kit. Be sure to have all the necessary documents ready for your Nikah, including your NRICs or passports, as these will be verified by your tok kadi before the solemnisation. You may also wish to have a final briefing with your coordinator or point person so that everyone is clear and confident about the day’s programme. Above all, set aside quiet moments for prayer and family blessings. Consider involving your loved ones in planning the du’a or selecting meaningful readings that speak to your story as a couple. Whether you’re seeking barakah for your marriage or simply grounding yourself in gratitude, let this be the time to nurture your heart and spirit.
